Deaf Awareness Week: Our commitment to accessible services

This week is Deaf Awareness Week. Deaf Awareness Week is a national awareness week that highlights the experiences of Deaf people and those who are hard of hearing, and the importance of accessible, inclusive communication. It’s a time to reflect on how services, information and everyday interactions can be made more accessible — helping people feel listened to, supported and safe.

At STAR Housing, we do our best to provide an accessible and inclusive service and to support you in a way that works for your individual needs. We know that clear communication is important, and that feeling listened to helps you feel confident, supported and safe in your home.

If you are Deaf or hard of hearing, we want you to know that extra support is available – and that letting us know what you need really helps us to support you properly.

Let us know if you need extra support

Accessibility is not just about information – it’s about how we work with you.

If you are Deaf or have trouble hearing and need extra support when:

  • contacting us
  • attending appointments
  • having repairs or home visits
  • receiving information

please let us know. We can talk with you about what works best and make reasonable adjustments, such as agreeing preferred ways to keep in touch or making appointment arrangements clearer.

Keeping you safe in your home

If you are Deaf or hard of hearing, we can also provide specialist smoke alarms with visual and vibrating alerts, instead of standard audible alarms. These alarms are designed to alert you in an emergency in a way that works for you.

If you think you may need this type of smoke alarm, please tell us as soon as possible. This is really important for your safety, and we want to make sure you feel safe in your home.

Support online, if you want it

Our website also includes accessibility support to help you read and use our online information in a way that suits you.

This includes the Recite Me accessibility tool, which lets you adjust things like text size, colours, fonts and language. You can choose what works for you, and turn features on or off as needed.

To use Recite Me, click the accessibility tool button on the left‑hand side of the screen when you are on our website.

If you would like help using this tool, a member of our team can show you how to use it in a way that suits your needs.
