Gas safety is something no one should take chances with. That’s why STAR Housing is supporting Gas Safety Week 2026, taking place from 14 to 20 September.
This year’s theme is Take No Chances, highlighting the simple steps we can all take to help keep homes safe.
At STAR, we arrange annual gas safety checks for our customers and use appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineers and contractors to carry out gas work. However, there are still a few important things customers can do to help keep themselves and their families safe.
Make sure we can access your home
Annual gas safety checks are an important part of keeping your home safe. If you’ve received an appointment, please make sure we can gain access to carry out the inspection. If you need to rearrange your appointment, let us know as soon as possible.
Know the warning signs
If a gas appliance isn’t working correctly, you may notice:
- Yellow or orange flames instead of blue
- Black marks or staining around an appliance
- Excessive condensation
- Appliances that aren’t working as expected
If something doesn’t seem right, don’t ignore it. Contact STAR Housing straight away.
Be aware of carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that cannot be seen, smelt or tasted.
Symptoms can include:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Breathlessness
- Collapse
- Loss of consciousness
If you suspect carbon monoxide may be present, get fresh air immediately, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, and seek medical attention if you feel unwell.
Test your carbon monoxide alarm
Carbon monoxide alarms provide an early warning if CO is present in your home. Test your alarm regularly and let us know if you believe it isn’t working correctly.
Leave gas work to the experts
Never attempt gas work yourself. All gas work carried out on behalf of STAR Housing is completed by appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineers and contractors.
