Join STAR Housing as a Co‑opted Board and Subcommittee Member

We are now looking for two independent members to join our Board and subcommittees, bringing independent expertise and constructive challenge to help shape the future of our services and support effective decision-making at a strategic level.

We are particularly interested in people with experience in finance, audit and risk, including Housing Revenue Account finance, or housing development, regeneration, sustainability, strategic investment or asset management.

We currently have one vacancy on each of the following subcommittees.

Development, Sustainability and Strategic Investment Subcommittee (DSSI)

The Development, Sustainability and Strategic Investment Subcommittee plays a key role in shaping how we grow and invest in homes for the future.

The subcommittee:

  • reviews current and proposed housing development, including new build homes and land or property purchases on behalf of the Council’s Housing Revenue Account
  • keeps the Board informed on development progress and key issues, making recommendations where needed
  • reviews and approves sustainability initiatives, projects and programmes of work
  • reviews and approves strategic investment plans and projects

This work also includes oversight of development appraisals, acquisition viability, funding, environmental considerations and wider risk management.

Finance, Audit and Risk Subcommittee (FAR)

The Finance, Audit and Risk Subcommittee focuses on strong governance, financial oversight and assurance.

The subcommittee:

  • keeps the Board informed on financial reporting, internal and external audit, and risk management
  • approves organisation-wide audit plans and inspection programmes
  • reviews and approves finance, audit and risk policies, procedures and projects

This includes areas such as audit, governance, anti-fraud and anti-corruption, and internal controls.

What to expect

Subcommittees meet quarterly. The Development, Sustainability and Strategic Investment Subcommittee meetings are held online, while Board meetings are held in person. There will also be opportunities to attend Board meetings, strategy sessions, training and appraisal activity.

You will also be invited to attend a range of STAR events throughout the year, including our Annual General Meeting, Board away days, development openings and community events.

This role attracts remuneration of £1,500 per annum, and reasonable expenses are also available.

Successful applicants will be expected to complete all mandatory training relevant to the role.
