Ending Your Tenancy

4 Weeks Written Notice Required

If you decide to move to a different housing provider, you must give us 4 weeks written notice by completing a Termination of Tenancy Form. Your tenancy will end 4 weeks from the Monday after we receive your notice.

Please make sure the property is left in good condition. We will arrange to visit your home to advise what you should remove and this may include carpets. If any items are left behind or damage has occurred, you may be charged for removal or repairs.

If the tenancy is to end because the tenant has passed away, an Executor or Administrator must formally end the tenancy by completing a Termination of Tenancy form. If there is no Executor or Administrator please Contact us
If you need to inform us that the tenant is moving into a Care Home, please Contact us

Guidance Notes

  • If you decide you want to end the tenancy, you must give the STAR Housing at least 28 days’ written notice, ending on a Sunday.
  •  At the end of the seven day notice period, you must give us vacant possession of the property. This means there must not be anyone else living in the property when you leave.
  • Before your tenancy ends, we’ll fit a secure key safe at the property so you can return your keys easily and safely.
  • When you move out of the property, you must leave it empty, clean and in a good state of repair. You must also leave any loft space, garden, garage, shed or any other outbuilding or land allocated to you clean and clear of your belongings or rubbish. We may charge you for the costs involved in removing any belongings or rubbish left in the property when you move out.
  • You must ensure that there are no animals left in the property when you leave and take reasonable steps to ensure that the property is free from rodent or insect infestation.
  • You must dispose of any rubbish or unwanted household items or furniture in the proper way. We will have the right to dispose of any such items left at the property, after you have moved out. We will charge you if we have to remove any of your belongings or rubbish after you have left.
  • You must ensure that the disconnection of any gas, electricity, water supplies or household appliances is done safely and properly and that this meets legal requirements.
  • You will be charged rent until the tenancy has ended.
  • Do not leave any of your belongings behind. The Council will dispose of any belongings left after the end of tenancy date. The Council will charge you for the cost of clearing and cleaning the property.
  • Don’t forget to redirect your post. When you end your tenancy, please arrange for your mail to be redirected and update your address with banks, utility providers, and other important contacts. This helps keep your information secure and ensures you don’t miss any important letters. Set up mail redirection with Royal Mail.
