If you are a leaseholder of Shropshire Council, your lease is managed by STAR Housing

If you purchased your flat or maisonette under the Right to Buy Scheme from Oswestry Borough Council, Bridgnorth District Council, or Shropshire Council, you are now a leaseholder of Shropshire Council. Your lease is managed by Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing. 

When you bought your home, you acquired a long lease, typically for 125 years. While you own the property internally, the landlord retains ownership of the building and is responsible for its overall upkeep and communal areas.

Your Responsibilities

You’re responsible for:

  • Paying your share of communal maintenance and management costs (e.g. cleaning, grounds maintenance)
  • Contributing to major repairs and improvements. You will be notified of the proposed works and costs before works start through a section 20 consultation process.
  • Maintaining everything inside your home, including:
  • Plumbing (pipework, baths, sinks, toilets, water tanks)
  • Internal doors and decoration 
  • Electrical wiring and fuse boards
  • Heating systems
  • Glazing and entrance doors
  • Annual gas safety checks
  • Floorboards and plaster 

Our Responsibilities

Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing is responsible for: 

  • Roofs and chimneys
  • Rainwater goods and soil pipes
  • Communal pathways and roads
  • Stairwells and structural walls
  • External brickwork and foundations
  • Drains and fencing
  • External doors and window frames
  • Communal internal and external decoration
  • Lifts, door entry systems, and communal lighting
  • Communal aerials
  • General upkeep of the building and shared facilities
