Meter tampering is illegal and dangerous

Tampering with gas or electricity meters is illegal and extremely dangerous. It involves interfering with a meter to stop it recording usage correctly or bypassing it altogether.

This can lead to electric shocks, burns, fires, gas leaks, or even explosions, putting not just your life at risk, but also your neighbours’.

It’s also classed as theft and can result in a fine or prison sentence.

If you suspect meter tampering

  • In an emergency call the National Gas Emergency Line on 0800 111 999
  • To report a power cut call 105 free from mobiles and landlines. This will connect you to your distribution network operator.
