Electrical Safety

Electrical Safety Checks

To help keep your home safe, we carry out an Electrical Safety Inspection every five years.

This allows us to create an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for your home where we record that all electrical installations are safe for you and your family.

What’s involved?

An electrical safety check usually takes up to two hours and includes:

  • Testing sockets, switches, light fittings and fuse board
  • Using specialist equipment to check hidden wiring
  • Accessing all rooms and electrical points to complete the inspection

If we find anything that needs attention, we’ll contact you to arrange the repair, or a full rewire if required.

Who carries out the inspection?

Our in house electrical team will complete the inspection in your home.

How to get ready for the inspection

Please make sure:

  • Someone aged 18 or over is at home during the appointment
  • Our team has clear access to the fuse board, sockets, switches and lights
  • Pets are kept out of the rooms where our operatives are working

Why we carry out electrical checks

As your landlord, STAR Housing has a legal duty to complete an electrical inspection in your home every five years.

There is no charge for this inspection, and the process is straightforward

Booking or changing your appointment

To make or rearrange an appointment, please contact us

Please give 48 hours’ notice to re-arrange an appointment.

If you don’t allow access

It’s a condition of your tenancy that you allow us access to carry out essential safety checks.

If you miss your appointment or don’t give 48 hours’ notice to cancel, we may seek to recover a £25 cancellation fee.

Missed appointments increase costs that could otherwise be used for home improvements — each year, which could mean 18 new kitchens or 25 new bathrooms.

If we cannot access your home, we may have to take legal action for failing to comply with your tenancy agreement.
