National Apprenticeship Week 2026 – Growing Skills and Careers at STAR Housing

National Apprenticeship Week is a great chance to highlight the value of apprenticeships and the impact they have on people starting, shaping or progressing their careers. At STAR Housing, apprenticeships play a big part in how we develop local talent, build skills, and support people at every stage of their career journey.

This year, we’re sharing the experiences of two colleagues: Max, who is currently completing his electrical apprenticeship with us, and Dan, who began his career at STAR as an apprentice almost eight years ago.

Max’s Story – Electrical Apprentice

Max joined STAR Housing in August 2024 and is working towards his Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Technical Services. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he left school and originally thought he might go into sport or science. But after seeing family members build stable and rewarding careers as electricians, he decided to follow the same path.

Since joining STAR Housing, Max has really thrown himself into the role. He works independently and enjoys learning on the job, saying it’s helped him build confidence and practical skills quickly. Working in a social housing environment has also given him lots of opportunities to meet customers, learn how to communicate clearly, and understand how important good service is.

“It’s been really good so far. I’ve learnt so much by getting stuck in every day and seeing how things work in real situations. Working in housing has been great too because you meet lots of different customers, and it’s helped me build my confidence. I like knowing I’m learning a trade that will always be needed and earning while I study has made a big difference.”

Max is now well into his apprenticeship and progressing confidently. He’s completing his portfolio and building the experience he needs to qualify, with his sights set on achieving full electrician status later this year.

Dan’s Story – From Apprentice to Multi‑Skilled Officer

Dan is a brilliant example of progression at STAR Housing. He joined nearly eight years ago as a Business Administration Apprentice, completing his Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration. After finishing his apprenticeship, he moved into our Lettings team and continued developing his skills, achieving both his CIH Level 3 in Housing Practice and CIH Level 4 in Housing Management whilst working in our lettings department. Always keen to keep learning, Dan is currently undertaking a six‑month secondment as an IT Officer, supporting our digital systems and gaining experience in a completely different part of the organisation.

Dan decided that A‑levels weren’t the right route for him, and he feels the hands‑on experience he’s gained at STAR Housing has given him confidence, skills and direction.

“Starting as an apprentice gave me real experience straight away. I’ve learnt so much by working across different teams, and it’s helped me find out what I enjoy and what I’m good at. STAR has always supported me to keep developing, and it’s opened doors I never expected.”

We’re proud to see colleagues like Dan grow within the organisation, try new roles, and build a long‑term future with us.

Supporting Skills, Confidence and Opportunity

Apprenticeships continue to be a key part of how we develop our workforce. They bring new ideas, fresh perspectives and valuable energy to our services. Whether someone is starting out like Max, or progressing through new roles like Dan, apprenticeships help people build real‑world experience, learn from colleagues, and gain qualifications that support long‑term careers.

We’re committed to offering more pathways into housing, trades, customer service, digital roles and other areas across STAR Housing.
