Swap your home

Swap Your Home – Mutual Exchange

If you have a secure tenancy with a local authority or registered social housing provider, you may have the right to mutually exchange your home with another tenant.

This is often the best and most flexible way to move if your current home no longer suits your needs in terms of location, size, or style.

Can Anyone Apply for a Mutual Exchange?

Not everyone is eligible. For example, tenants on an introductory tenancy do not have the right to exchange. If you’re unsure and are a STAR Customer, please contact us to check your eligibility.

How Does It Work?

  • Confirm your eligibility with your landlord.
  • Advertise your home for exchange. Shropshire Council tenants* can register for free with HomeSwapper – a national mutual exchange platform. (If you are a STAR Housing customer your tenancy is with Shropshire Council.)
  • Once you’ve found a potential exchange partner:
  • Complete our online Mutual Exchange Application Form.
  • We’ll assess your eligibility and arrange a property inspection.
  • You’ll receive the outcome in writing.

Please note: All parties involved in the exchange must complete the application form for their respective landlords.
