At STAR Housing, we’re committed to being open about how we work and how we use information. We publish a wide range of material on our website and in our regular communications — but if you can’t find what you need, just ask. We’re always happy to help.

Freedom of Information (FOI) Request

If you need more information about STAR Housing as an organisation — for example, more information about our policies, procedures, statistics or how we make decisions — please make a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

FOI covers information we hold as a public body and does not include anyone’s personal data.

  • We will provide a full response within 20 working days, in line with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
  • If your request is unclear, we will contact you to ask for clarification — the 20‑day period pauses until clarification is received.

  • We’ll first check if the information is already publicly available — if it is, we’ll send it to you. 
  • If it’s not, we’ll acknowledge your request and may ask for clarification if needed. Please note: we can’t process your request until we receive any outstanding clarification. 
  • You’ll receive a response within 20 working days

We’ll provide the information unless there’s a valid exemption under the FOI Act that prevents us from doing so.

Many requests are free of charge. However, in some cases, a fee may apply to cover: 

  • Administration costs  
  • Photocopying (10p per sheet)  
  • Postage  
  • Complex requests requiring significant time or resources 

We’ll let you know in advance if a fee applies.

Subject Access Request (SAR)

We securely store information about you and your tenancy on our internal systems. Only STAR Housing staff can access this information, and only when it’s needed to support you or deliver the services you rely on.

Sometimes we may need to share information with other STAR teams or trusted external partners who work on our behalf. You can find full details in our Privacy Notice.

If you’re a customer and want to see the personal information we hold about you — such as your tenancy records or correspondence on your account — please make a Subject Access Request (SAR) under data protection law. You may be asked to confirm your identity so we can keep your information secure.

How to make an SAR request

We will acknowledge your request within 3 working days.

We will provide your information within one month, as required by UK GDPR. Note: If we need ID to verify your identity, we will let you know — the one‑month period does not start until ID is received.

If your request is complex or we receive several requests from you, we may extend this by up to two additional months — if so, we will tell you within the first month.
