Understanding Your Tenancy Agreement

What Your Tenancy Means for You

Your tenancy agreement is a legal contract between you (the named tenant/s) and Shropshire Council, and it sets out your rights and responsibilities. Your tenancy is managed by STAR Housing, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

It’s important to understand the terms of your agreement. These will have been explained when you moved in, but if you have any questions, please refer to your tenancy agreement or contact your Neighbourhood Housing Officer.

Need help with your tenancy?
Your Neighbourhood Housing Officer can explain your tenancy type, your rights and responsibilities and answer any questions.

Types of Tenancy

Depending on your circumstances, your tenancy may fall into one of the following categories:

Introductory Tenancy

Usually for new tenants during the first 12 months. You’ll have fewer rights initially, but if there are no issues, this will automatically convert to a secure tenancy after the introductory tenancy ends.

Secure Tenancy

If you’ve been a tenant for at least 12 months, or you’ve transferred your tenancy from another local authority landlord, you’ll hold a Secure Tenancy.

This type of tenancy offers long-term stability and additional rights, giving you peace of mind and the opportunity to make your home your own. Secure tenants may also be eligible to apply for mutual exchanges, carry out certain improvements, and enjoy greater protection under housing law.
