Changing Supplier

Get Connected

When you move into your new home, your gas and electric supplies will already be connected. To make sure everything is set up correctly, please follow these steps when you get the keys to your new home:

  • During sign up, the Lettings Team will ask you to complete the ‘Setting up your gas and electric’ form at the bottom of this page. 
  • Take both gas and electric meter readings and write these down. 
  • Our Lettings Team will confirm who your current gas and electricity suppliers are during sign up. 
  • Contact your gas and electric suppliers to give them your opening meter readings. You can switch to different suppliers later if you prefer. 

Gas Cookers

If your property has a gas supply, the gas pipe in the cooker space will already be connected. STAR Housing does not connect gas cookers. It is your responsibility to arrange this. 

To have your gas cooker connected, you must appoint and pay for a Gas Safe registered engineer to carry out the work. 
Tell the engineer that you need them to: 

  • install a bayonet fitting (if one is not already installed) 
  • connect your gas cooker 

When the work is complete, you must request a Gas Safe certificate from your engineer. A copy of the certificate must be posted or emailed to:

I understand that STAR Housing’s Lettings Team will advise me who the current electricity supplier is during sign up.
I understand it is my responsibility to set up my electricity account and ensure I have credit on any meter.
I understand that a qualified electrician will need to connect my electric cooker.
I consent to my details being passed to Green Energy Switch, so they can contact me to provide energy advice.

I understand that a Gas Safe registered engineer will need to connect my gas cooker, or a qualified electrician if I am having an electric cooker.
I understand that, as a condition of my tenancy, I must allow access for a gas service to be completed every 10 months. Failure to do so is a breach of my tenancy.
