We have granted Broseley Joggers Couch to 5k programme £550 through our Community Chest Fund to get even more people off their couch and pounding the streets.

The programme, which has seen a successful initial programme, aims to positively effect and encourage a healthy lifestyle across Broseley and surrounding areas, reducing obesity in Shropshire and thus reduce costs for local healthcare.

A total of 30 residents have participated in the initial programme, and a further 30 people have expressed interest in a second. The money that they have been given will help train three more ‘run leaders’ who are necessary for the programme to continue to positively impact the health of local residents.

Mr Peter Welch from Broseley Joggers, said:

“We bring together people who may not be confident about their body shape exercise together in a non-competitive, supporting environment.

“We’re pleased that, with this funding, this programme will continue to unite the community, bringing families together and all ages ranging from people in their twenties to their sixties.

“There are no barriers to participation – it’s also free to all residents.

We're very grateful for the grant from STAR Housing. We used the funds to put three members of the club through UK Athletics Run Leader training. This allowed us to stage a 'Couch to 5K' programme from April until June. The programme was a great success as you can see from the numbers.

Neighbourhood manager Martin Whitelegg, said:

“This is a great community project which we are proud to support. We hope that the money will enable more people to reap the benefits of becoming more active and getting fit & healthy.”

The Community Chest Fund is a pot of money that we put aside for local projects in the communities in which it operates. People can apply for grants of up to £750 to either make their community cleaner, greener or more united.

Previous successful projects include patios for community areas, swings for local parks and cleaning up areas of housing that need attention.
